Phoenix Landscape Design - Water Features
Water features have become a very popular element in Phoenix landscape design. With the housing market as it is today, many homeowners are choosing to remodel and update their existing homes rather than moving. In addition, homeowners are trending toward creating usable outdoor living spaces. Water features help homeowners achieve both!
Water features bring your Arizona landscaping to a whole new level! They foster a sanctuary-like feeling. They help you escape. They make your property a place to retreat and rejuvenate. Fountains are tranquil and melodious. They are a soothing sight and a relaxing sound. They also help mask traffic noise and attract birds and other wildlife.
There are a variety of options available when it comes to water features and Phoenix landscape design. You can choose anything from a simple birdbath to a cascading waterfall. Your water feature can blend into your landscape and be more of a natural element or it can be a dramatic focal piece. You can choose a pond to provide a habitat for koi and lush greenery or you can choose a small container fountain that functions as a piece of art. Here are some of our favorite ideas!
Birdbath
A birdbath is the simplest water feature. It is both low-cost and low-maintenance and is ideal for small backyard landscaping ideas. If you are looking for a simple water feature to attract birds, a birdbath might be right for you. There are a wide variety of birdbaths available. Some that simply sit on the ground, some that hang, and traditional pedestal models. Ideally, a birdbath should be 1 to 2 inches deep with a narrow lip. In Arizona, a larger capacity bath would be best so it will not evaporate as quickly. A birdbath with a dripper, water spray, bubbler or fountain will attract more birds. Also, a birdbath with moving water will help to minimize insects and algae growth.
Container Fountain
Container Fountains have gained tremendous popularity. These fountains use recirculating pumps and can be as ornate or basic as you choose. You can use anything that holds water to function as your container…a flower pot, wooden barrel, ceramic bowl, etc. These fountains are great for small backyards or large backyards depending upon the design you choose. They also add a welcoming touch to courtyards. By adding rocks, varying the spout size, spitter size and pump size, you can create a variety of sounds and looks.
Wall Fountain
Wall fountains are another great choice for your backyard sanctuary. Wall fountains consist of a reservoir, recirculating pump, riser tube, water release head and water flow surface. These fountains can be made of a variety of materials including fiberglass, copper, cast stone, sandstone, stainless steel, glass or slate. Depending on the materials used and the size you choose, wall fountains can be made to fit any budget.
Pond
A backyard pond is ideal for larger backyards, and there are many options available. A basic pond is comprised of basic water features. A water garden pond is more intricate. It has pond life, plants and waterfalls. A wildlife pond is similar to a water garden except it does not have waterfalls. It harvests pond plants, fish, turtles and frogs. A koi pond is designed especially in order to keep koi. Depending on the pond type that you want, special consideration needs to be taken in choosing an ideal location for your pond. It is best to place these water features away from shedding trees and out of direct sunlight.
